Here we offer you the most important information to help you organize the trek in the Colca Canyon without a guide
We are your support for the trek in the Colca Canyon
This way you can walk freely, without thinking about reservations.
The truth is that the tourists always have. Currently the tourists still do it.
At the moment, for Colca canyon trek is no regulation.
In all the towns during the trail of the classic and non-classic treks there are services such as restaurants, home stay, hostels, swimming pools, hot springs.
All these services plus the information and maps that we can provide you at the Santiago house make treks without a guide in the Colca Canyon increasingly easier.
We recommend spending the first night in Cabanaconde so that you can see the difficulty of the trek from the Achachihua viewpoint, and in the distance see the different towns where you will walk.
From the Achachihua viewpoint with our Colca trek map you can really have a clearer idea of the difficulty of the trek.
The trek route inside the canyon is not yet marked, but with a map and following the wider paths you can do it.
It is recommended to have common sense of location and trekking experience.
Keep in mind that during the rainy season, January, February, March and part of April, the rain makes the trek difficult, and especially when the clouds descend into the canyon it is very difficult to find your way.
Especially in these months it is recommended to rent a local guide.
The hike to the Colca Canyon is a must if you pass through the city of Arequipa.
You can also reach the Colca Canyon from the city of Puno, without going through the city of Arequipa.
Here you can find information to be able to walk through the Colca Canyon without a guide.
We will explain what the walking options are, such as classic routes and unconventional routes.
And above all we will tell you and show you the starting points of each trek.
If you really doubt it, we can support you with local guides.
Among the most visited treks in Peru, such as the Inca Trail trek, Huayhuash trek, Salkantay trek among others. The trek in the Colca Canyon has the most advantages and is the least difficult.
The Colca trek is not a high altitude trek and has different options, for people who like to walk little and for people who like to walk a lot.
The trek to the Colca Canyon is at 2.5 difficulty out of 5
Here we explain what the degree of difficulty is about.
Trek of very short distances with access to comfort, such as shade and the paths are in good condition and signposted. No experience necessary.
Treks of more than 4-5 hours per day, you walk along trails where we find small stones, dust and no shade.
Usually with positive and negative slopes of up to 1200m
You walk up to an average height of 2500-4000 meters above sea level
You walk between valley and canyons.
This level is for people who are active in outdoor physical activities, such as running or hiking on weekends and exercising at gyms.
Examples: Trekking Patagonia, Colca Canyon trekking, Inca Trail trek, Huayhuash, Choquequirao trek, Valley of Fire trek in Colca.
Hiking Tatras-Slovakia, Sagro Mountains-Morocco.
Treks of more than 6 -7 hours per day require prior experience in level 2 treks.
Treks from 4000 to 6000 meters high
These treks are made to volcanoes and snow-capped mountains
Examples, Kilimanjaro, Trekking Cordillera Real Bolivia, Ausangate trek, Misti volcano, Chachani volcano, Ampato snow-capped mountain, Coropuna.
More difficult than level 3 and you can easily pass the 6,000 meters high, you can use crampons and ice axes during the route.
Hikes of many days with quite a difference in height
You can hike and climb glaciers and mountain peaks with permanent ice or permanent snow.
You can also walk through mountain ranges and mountains where there is no snow or ice, but what characterizes this level is that the number of hours of walking can be many.
Examples: Ascension Island Peak-Nepal, Ruwenzori-Uganda, Patagonian Continental Ice, Baltoro Trekking Pakistan, Cotopatxi-Chimborazo, Auyantepuy Rappelling-Venezuela.
They are very well organized expeditions where they pass 7 thousand meters in height.
Where satellite phones, oxygen tanks, high-end mountain equipment, porters and cooks are used.
The weather conditions are very changeable and sometimes very extreme.
The physical demand is very high and excellent preparation is recommended.
They are expeditions that last more than 7 days
It is very important to have experience in high mountains
Examples: Aconcagua, Everest, Cho Oyu, Lenin Peak.
Between May and November: Dry weather
During the day: up to 35 degrees Celsius
Overnight: 5 – 12 degrees Celsius
Between December and April: Rainy season
Normally it only rains in the afternoons, some days are sunny and others are foggy, especially in February.
In the rainy season, it is sometimes difficult to locate and find your way.
During the day: up to 30 degrees Celsius
Overnight: 12 degrees Celsius
You can get our detailed map of the different treks and also the starting points of all the treks.
You can obtain this map at our office in the city of Arequipa.
We are just 4 blocks from the main square of Arequipa
At 400 AB-1 Jerusalem Street
Pablo tour – Casa Santiago
You can also get our detailed map at our hotel in Cabanaconde at La Casa de Santiago in Cabanaconde.
Both options are physically difficult, both options start at an altitude of 3300 meters above sea level in the town of Cabanaconde and in both options you descend to the lower part of the canyon which is at 2100 meters above sea level.
However, the classic route is a little easier and with more presence of typical towns and local people. If you lose your way it is easier to find local people who can help you.
It is known as the Llahuar route, but there is an error because this is the name of a local hostel called Llahuar.
The owner gave it that name because two rivers meet in this place, the Llatica River and the Huaruro River:
Llahuar
The correct name of this route is PALLJA
The main attraction of the PALLJA route is the hot springs
In this place the offer of hostels is limited because there are only 2 accommodations:
Llahuar lodge and La Casa de virginia, both businesses have small pools of thermal water with temperatures up to 28 degrees Celsius.
IMPORTANT. – During the rainy season these pools do not work and are inoperative due to the overflowing of the rivers. Both hostels have the same problem.
Llahuar lodge and its pool are located next to the Colca River.
For many years tourists preferred this route because they said there were fewer tourists, however, as a result of its popularity we can now say that there are also quite a few tourists like the classic route.
Unfortunately now there is a road and many 4x4s are used that reaches this place and makes accessibility easier with a large influx of tourists.
This trek is quite difficult.
To get to this place you have to walk 5 hours down from Cabanaconde and there is no shade.
Many times tourists have to return by private 4×4 transportation from Llahuar to Cabanaconde because the climb is long and very physically difficult.
To return by transportation to Cabanaconde there are no local buses
You have to pay for private transportation and it is expensive.
It is known as the San Juan de Chuccho – Sangalle Oasis route.
This was the first route in the Colca Canyon and the one preferred by tourists.
On this side of the canyon the road reaches Sanjuan de Chuccho.
The good news is that the road does not reach the Sangalle Oasis, thus preserving the natural environment.
If we compare this route with the non-classical route, the classic route offers a combination of culture, nature, typical towns and hiking.
On the tour you can see different towns practically suspended in the Andes mountain range.
Along the way you can find tourists and local people and this helps a lot if you lose your way.
The advantage is that in each place there is a wide range of accommodation and restaurants and you will be able to choose the best place to eat and sleep.
This trek starts from Cejana Pata just 20 minutes walk from Cabanaconde 3300 meters above sea level.
It is a 3-hour descent until you reach the Oasis of San Galle 2100 meters above sea level.
Here you can find 20 degree Celsius thermal water pools
On the tour you can see different varieties of cactus, geological formations and giant hummingbirds.
We can make a box lunch for you
In the afternoon we recommend returning after 1pm at that time the wind starts to blow.
If you think the climb is difficult for you
We can reserve mules for you to ride back so you can stay longer at the Oasis.
The climb on foot is 3 hours and by mule only 1 hour and 30 minutes.
This route is the most recommended because there is no road and the path remains the same, preserving the flora and fauna.
This is a pre-Inca road
Day 1.- This trek starts from the Mirador de San Miguel, 20 minutes from Cabanaconde.
Walk from 3300 meters to 2200 meters above sea level in 3 hours

And a descent of one hour until reaching the Oasis – San Galle 2100 meters above sea level.
Night at the Oasis
Total 6 hours of trek
Day 2.- 3-hour climb from 2100m to 3300m to Cabanaconde.
If you do not want to walk uphill and are tired, you can rent mules. You have to coordinate this a day before.
Day 1.- Cabanaconde – San Juan de Chuccho – Tapay
This trek starts from the Mirador de San Miguel, 20 minutes from Cabanaconde.
Walk from 3300 meters to 2200 meters above sea level in 3 hours

Total 5-6 hours of trek.
Day 2.- Malata-Coshñirhua- Oasis-Cabanaconde
You descend along the same path that you came until you find a path that goes to the right in the direction of the town of Coshñirhua-Malata, 2700 meters above sea level.
1-2 hours downhill
Then 1-2 hours of descent until reaching the Oasis 2100 meters above sea level
Pool and lunch at the Oasis
In the afternoon 3 hours of ascent to Cabanaconde from 2100 to 3287 meters above sea level.
The non-classic treks on the PALLJA route start from the ACHACHIHUA Viewpoint, which is just 15 minutes walk from Cabanaconde.
We do not recommend doing this trek in a single day because it is really very physically difficult.
But if you want to do it in just one day you can do it with help.
Many years ago, when the road did not reach here it was a wild and unique place. And there weren’t many tourists.
Obviously when a road arrives everything changes, but it also has its advantages, such as traveling there and/or returning in a 4X4 truck.
Or combine 4X4 truck + trek
Obviously you can do the entire route on foot with à la carte trek options on the second day.
Option 1.- This option is easy for people who want to go by 4×4, enjoy very good views, visit the lower part of the canyon and the hot springs next to the river.
In a 4×4 truck we go from Cabanaconde 3287 masl to the Colca River 2100 masl.
The truck crosses the Colca River and reaches the Huaruro River bridge.
The descent by van lasts 2 hours
You can enjoy the waters and have lunch.
The place where you have the hot springs near the river is the Llahuar hostel.
At a reasonable time, we return to Cabanaconde in a 4X4 truck for 2 hours.
The beginning of these treks begins at EL MIRADOR DE ACHACHIHUA
Day 1.- Trek Cabanaconde – Pallja (Llahuar)
We begin the trek from the Mirador de Achachihua 3300 meters above sea level, a descent on foot to the Colca River 2100 meters above sea level for 5 hours until we reach Pallja.
In Pallja there are 2 accommodations:
Llahuar lodge and the La casa de Virginia
Night in one of these hostels
Day 2.– A la carte treks
Route 1.- 5-hour trek directly to the Oasis. – This trek is for people who do not want to walk a lot and want to fully enjoy the pool and nature in the oasis.
Route 2.- Trek of 7 hours, passing through the town of Llatica until reaching the Oasis. This trek is for people who like sweat and get to know to an unvisited part of the Colca Canyon (town of Llatica). You sleep in the oasis in typical bamboo cabins.
Route 3.- Trek of 11 hours, walking through the town of Fure, Huaruro waterfall-town of Fure-Oasis.
This is a super trek we call it the COLCA TREK MACHO.
To do it you need to be in very good physical condition and be a little crazy.
This trek is for people who like to push themselves to the maximum physically and see unvisited places in this canyon.
For people who do not want to walk so much this day and want to visit the Huaruro waterfall, we can add one more day to the program and spend the night in Fure and thus we can do a 4-day non-classical Colca trek in the Colca canyon.
Route 4.- 8-hour trek, this trek in the Colca Canyon unites the two parts of the canyon: The non-classical part and the classic part. It is a trekking through the entire Colca canyon.
This trek is for people who like to do something different, but at the same time not miss out on the classic.
This route is the preferred option for our clients since there is not much climbing.
During the 8 hours of trek there are only two hours of climbing.
In this option we sleep in the Oasis in typical bamboo cabins.
You walk 2 hours uphill to the Apacheta viewpoint then flat 2-3 hours to Malata Coshñirhua.
1 hour descent to San Juan de Chuccho lunch
After lunch, the trek to the Oasis begins, 1 hour up and 1 hour down.
Total 8 hours trek
In Arequipa there are two bus stations: The terrestrial terminal and the Terrapuerto.
Local buses to Chivay and Cabanaconde leave from
THE TERRESTRIAL TERMINAL.
The Arequipa land terminal and the Terrapuerto are almost together, separated by a parking lot.
Important: Ask for seats in the right row of the bus to see the valley and the Colca canyon.
The bus has enough space for backpacks.
Before getting on the bus, right at the door of the bus they will ask for your backpack so that they can put it in the place where backpacks are taken, you have to say «This backpack goes to Cabanaconde» Then they will put your backpack in the specific place for Cabanaconde.
Because this bus goes through different towns until it reaches Cabanaconde.
In Cabanaconde there is no bus station, the last bus stop is the Cabanaconde main square.
We can buy the bus ticket for you.

Then we continue to “Patahuasi” (Pampa Cañahuas): Located in the Aguada Blanca National Reserve, from here we can observe the north face of the Misti volcano, we will find vicuñas, llamas and alpacas, with great luck in the distance we could see foxes, guanacos or even cougars. Place where we can taste hot drinks made from natural herbs such as coca leaves, chachacoma, muña; These herbs fight altitude sickness.
At this point you will also be able to use the bathrooms.
Then we continue towards Tocrapampa: we will make a stop to observe the South American camelids such as: Llamas and alpacas grazing in their natural habitat, with a little luck we will observe the vicuñas, South American camelids privileged for having the finest and most expensive fiber in the textile industry. .
Then we continue to the “Mirador de los Volcanes” or known as Patapampa: located at 4900 meters above sea level.

Usually these buses are larger, minibuses for 25 to 40 passengers with enough space for suitcases. Although sometimes and very rarely they are small transports, that happens when there are not many passengers.
The seats are reclinable in large buses, but in small transports they only recline a little.
It is very difficult to know what type of transport will leave, it all depends on the number of passengers there are that day.
But generally they are big buses
Just a small but great detail, the tourist bus that goes to Puno does not leave from Cabanaconde.
This bus leaves from Chivay.
So you have to first take the transport from Cabanaconde to Chivay and then go to the bus office that goes to Puno.
13:00 hrs Departure from Plaza de Chivay, you have to be at the office 15 minutes before to register.
On the way we visit the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve.
You arrive near the main square of Puno at approximately 7:30 p.m.
You have these options:
From Cabanaconde you can take the local bus that leaves at 06:30 hrs with Andalucía, for short sections you do not need to buy the ticket in advance. Just get in line and get on the bus, if there are no seats available you will have to travel standing and as you pass through the towns people get off and there are more seats available.
This bus arrives in Chivay at 08:30-09:00,
Travel tip: (Hot springs)
Go to the office of the bus that goes to Puno, leave your large suitcases in the office.
Take a taxi and after 15 minutes you arrive at the LA CALERA hot springs and stay as long as you want, then take another taxi back to Chivay, have lunch and arrive at the bus office for Puno.
Chivay is a city that is not that big, from the farthest restaurant to the bus office for Puno is a 15-minute walk.
In the Plaza de Chivay there are quite a few restaurants, the bus offices that go to Puno are in the Plaza de Armas.
Departing from the Cabanaconde main square between 09:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., this minivan makes 2 stops at the best viewpoints, at the Choquetico viewpoint, Antahuilque viewpoint, Maca church and at the Chacapi hot springs in the town of Yanque.
This minivan arrives in Chivay at 12:10hrs and you can tell the driver to drop you off at the bus office that goes to Puno. (Main Square).
Check in at the office, leave your large suitcases at the office, have lunch at a restaurant in the main square and then take the transportation to Puno.
I am honest with you with this option you will have very little time for lunch
It is recommended to buy sandwiches
Important:
The 3 stops that this tourist bus makes are only 5 minutes each stop, and in the hot springs at that time there are too many people, and they only enjoy the hot springs for 30 minutes.
If you want to make more stops, take your time for visits, enjoy more time in the hot springs and have a quiet lunch, I recommend the following option:
You decide the departure time, on the tour you can visit the Cruz del Condor for as long as you want, the Mirador de Tapay and the 4 best viewpoints in the Colca Valley, you can decide how long to stay in the hot springs, have lunch in peace and then With the same car he goes to the bus office that goes to Puno.
This is the best option to not miss the beauty of the Colca Valley and its attractions.
It is recommended to leave at 07:00 am from Cabanaconde.
For now in the Colca Valley and Cabanaconde there are no local buses that go directly to Cusco.
Just tell us the date so we can organize transportation between
Cabanaconde to Chivay
Chivay to Cusco
From Chivay we can organize tourist bus trips
Leaves at 07:00 am
Arrive in the city of Cusco 6pm
There are no daily departures, but we can get a group together.
